Done with Dorm Life? Get a Roommate to Live Off Campus

While you might be done with dorm life and ready for UCI off-campus housing, cost may be a concern. Try renting a two- or three-bedroom apartment with a roommate or two. Consider these points during your search for the right roommate.

  • Talk about tidiness: For many, the cleanliness factor is the most important part of having a roommate. Ask yourself if it’s a deal breaker. If you’re fine with laundry piling up, crumbs on the counters, and slightly overflowing trashcans, then tidiness isn’t at the top of your list. On the other hand, if you need someone who will keep their personal space and common areas tidy, make this known. Your checklist should start with cleanliness habits and their significance to your living situation.
  • Think about your interests: It’s important to get along with your roommate. Nothing’s worse than coming home to someone you don’t jive with at all, whether in interests or lifestyle. An early riser may not want to live with a loud night owl. Cover these aspects of your routines to ensure a harmonious situation. Remember that a lease is a legal agreement. While it can be broken or a roommate can be removed, it’s best not to have to get to that point.
  • Friends vs. roommates: It’s important to know what type of relationship you expect from your roommate. Some people go into the search hoping to find a best friend. While this is a nice idea, you’ll want to make sure the other person feels the same. If you’re moving to Irvine from another city or state, are you searching for a new partner to explore Orange County shopping and outdoor activities? Or are you just looking for someone to share living expenses with?
  • Consider relationship status: If you are single, having another single roommate as a going-out buddy could be beneficial. Think about the fact that a non-single roommate could either be away from home more often than not, or they could bring over their significant other anytime they want. While this one’s hard to control, it’s still worth mulling over before committing to a year-long lease.
  • Lay some ground rules (for sharing and not sharing): If you’re still reeling over that last roommate who ate your leftover pizza, it might be a good idea to lay some ground rules when it comes to sharing food, appliances, and other household items. Make it clear which things are for common use or personal use between both of you. If you do share certain things, be respectful and implement compromise. If you’re using their coffee maker, buy the coffee every other week. Ultimately, the roommate situation is one full of give and take.
