It seems like a long time ago, but there used to be a time when we knew our neighbors; when children would play together and parents would stand curbside, engaged in friendly chatter.
But now, whether it’s because of how busy we’ve become, or security fears, we don’t tend to know our neighbors any more. Gone are the days of kids playing in the streets until dusk. Now, when our cars pull up into the driveway, we scurry into our homes and close the door. We keep to ourselves because, well, as they say, “times have changed.” With our society moving at a faster and more detached pace due to technology, busy schedules and the frequency at which we change jobs, homes and locations, it makes it harder to feel any sense of community. In essence, we have become isolated in our own homes.
Recognizing this shift in our culture, Villas at Playa Vista is bringing the sense of neighborhood back to apartment living with programs, activities and events that offer unique experiences for residents. Events include, pool parties and supper clubs, cooking classes, wine tastings and "Mingle & Jingle" holiday events. This is when residents who may have walked past one another while hurriedly en-route to work, now have a moment to stop, take a breath and introduce themselves. This is when friendships begin—sometimes lifelong ones—as couples excitedly talk about double dates, while families plan poolside barbeques.
“I call it ‘purposeful programming’,” says Michelle Fortunato, Senior Loyalty Program Manager. “My role is to ensure that our events and activities help our residents settle in and become part of a vibrant, friendly community where they live.”
