Here is a list of some of the best hikes in the city.

Jeffrey Open Space Trail

Meandering through neighborhoods and open space, this paved trail is ideal for walkers, joggers, bikers, strollers and dogs. You’ll find grassy areas along the path and also a series of intaglio panels that date back to the entire 500-year history of the Irvine Ranch.

Orchard Hills Loop Trail

This trail winds around an avocado orchard and features several steep climbs on uneven terrain. On clear days, enjoy sweeping ridgetop views of the coastline and Palos Verdes Peninsula. Hiking poles and plenty of water are recommended. 

Bommer Canyon

Keep an eye out for red-tailed hawks, songbirds and purple lupine on this heart-pumping hike in the hills. The trails are well-maintained and ideal for hiking, running and mountain biking.

Qual Hill Loop

All ages will enjoy this shorter, mostly flat hike offering wide-angle views of Saddleback and Irvine. Keep an eye out for butterflies and bees enjoying the coastal sagebrush.

Venta Spur Trail

This paved path makes its way through neighborhoods and some busy streets, but there is plenty of flora to be seen from bougainvillea, tall firs and scarlet firethorn hedges.

Tomato Springs

A short, easy outing with several viewpoint stops, this hike is ideal for any hiker. The path ends at a hilltop where you can see all of Irvine and, on clear days, gain a glimpse of Catalina Island. 

  • Distance: 0.5 miles
  • Launch point: Near Tomato Springs Park at Portola Springs
  • Nearby apartment communities: Portola Place and Portola Court

Shady Canyon Trail

Shady Canyon Trail is a longer, more challenging hike that rises along a gravel path with views of the golf course and nearby homes. Wildlife may include deer, roadrunners and quail.
