For decades, the Irvine Company has championed water conservation and achieved tremendous results, making us today a national leader in the efficient use – and notably – reuse of this precious resource.
Our proactive approach, both inside and outside our apartment communities, has resulted in an annual savings of more than 36 million gallons of water. For landscaping, we use or are converting to state-of-the-art, high-efficiency irrigation systems that reduce consumption through the use of:
- Smart irrigation controllers: The system controls how much water is used based on plant/soil type and weather conditions. It uses real-time satellite data that, for instance, shuts off the irrigation system during rainy or cold conditions.
- Drip and low-flow irrigation: Water is slowly applied into the soil, drastically reducing water usage and overspray onto non-landscaped areas.
- Master valves with flow sensors: When the flow sensor detects a leak, the water turns off.
Wherever possible, we irrigate our landscaping with recycled water. Since the early 1980s, for example, each apartment community in the city of Irvine uses recycled water for landscaping. Our Newport Coast apartment communities also use recycled water for their landscaping.
Our newer apartment communities feature water-saving fixtures and appliances, such as energy-saving washers and dryers. Our company also employs a team of water experts that continually monitors water usage and works to prevent overspray and runoff, quickly fixes any leaks, and ensures we are using the latest technology to conserve water.
Working together, we can ensure California remains the most desirable place in the world to live, work, and play.
